Welcome to A To Z On Mindfulness For Newbies
The fourteenth letter to be explored in A To Z on Mindfulness For Newbies is N. N is for Namaskar.
In Indian tradition, we usually say Namaskar or Namaste when we meet people or elders. This is to depict respect and greetings. And this is the simplest form of Yoga yet the most powerful tool to be mindful. There are numerous benefits of Namaskar. One is to keep yourself balanced and grounded.
Namaskar or Namaste is the way of greeting in which one puts the hands together and bows slightly.
The word ‘Namaskar’ is derived from the root ‘namaha’, which means paying obeisance (Namaskar) or salutation. Scientifically, ‘Namaha’ is a physical action expressing that ‘you are superior to me in all qualities and in every way’. Know about the Do’s and Dont’s before practicing it.

The conscious act of namaskar creates a feeling of respect and appreciation for the one we are greeting, and also for ourselves.
Simple Ways To Do Namaskar Everyday
- Do it while waking up and going to bed to thank the Almighty.
- Greet elders and anyone with Namaskar.
- Try to be in namaskar posture for at least 60 seconds while praying.
- Inculcate this practice at least three times in your day to initiate your inward journey.
- Spend in silence for sometimes by holding your hands in this pose.
- Look mindfully to any object like a flower, mountain or tree with your hold in namaskar mudra.

Agree Vasantha… The Namsakar, brings about a feeling of inner peace and positiveness
Yes, dear!!!
It’s a beautiful way of greeting that I’m trying to inculcate it in the children. In today’s environment the Hi and the Hello have overtaken it.
You are right, Tulika !!!
I love the word namaskar and feel a sense of peace when I wish someone with folded hands. It is the best way to greet anyone.
Rightly said.
With so much meaning behind the namaskar it is a pity we have adopted western ways of greeting each other like the hand shake.
Ya, it’s true!
Thats so true…The best way to give respect. The meaning you have explained is just superb which is somehow lost in todays scenario. People rather feel shy to do so. I liked the simple ways you shared to do so. Worth reading.
Thanks much!
Well…..you said it and delivered it.
Good content that kept me reading till the end.
