As an ex-professor at an engineering college with nearly two decades of connection with young students, I’m writing this post. My heart is aching like anything. Nearly 10 students committed suicide in last 15 days at Tamilnadu, India.

Who Has Given The Rights To Kill Yourself??? Are You Self Created ??? Is It Moral To Kill God’s Own Creation ???

Reasons behind my worry :

In recent times, deaths due to suicide is almost equal to the deaths due to natural reasons. The main thing to be noted is those who attempt suicide are mostly young students.

Major Reasons For Suicide :

  • life problems – Failure, divorce between parents
  • mental health – serious mental health condition
  • lifestyle – use of drugs or alcohol
  • employment – poor job security, low levels of job satisfaction or being unemployed
  • relationships – love affairs, extra marital affairs
  • genetics and family history
  • sexual abuse – within family
  • society – poverty, Caste and religion issues
  • psychology – loneliness, longing, ignorance

I am much worried about the numbers and not on the reasons in all suicide news. From my experience with the students, I would love to help them out.

  1. I hear you, Vasantha! It is indeed a terribly sad and alarming situation when young people are feeling so much pressure and stress in life, so much that life and living seem so meaningless and painful to them. You have listed some great ideas here to help us find an inner poise and calm. I think our education system really needs to have a serious debate on how to make education a means to facilitate greater emotional and psychological balance in learners. Only mental learning is never sufficient. Thanks for writing on this important topic.

      1. But sadly, most of our media and greedy politicians are only interested in this issue of student suicide is when there is a caste angle to it, so it can be horribly politicised for selfish gains!

  2. That was a very informative post, Vasantha! True. These days the number of suicides has gone up drastically. Help and counselling at the right hour will definitely go a long way in changing the negative mindset into a positive one.

  3. It is so sad, when young people already give up on life although it just began! But once you are in the turmoil you need to either stop yourself spinning or need someone who stops you for clearing your mind.

  4. Suicides among young people seems to be on the rise – too much pressure, expectations and a not enough investment in life-skills. I’m so glad that you survived – it gives so much more right to talk about this subject and help others.

  5. I admire your honesty and your help. Yes, we owe it to ourselves to be strong and fight challenges. We don’t have the right to end our lives. But what about terminal illnesses that wipe out a family’s resources? I know of two cases of domestic workers – one who had HIV and the other who needed dialysis on an almost daily basis who preferred to kill themselves rather than bleed their families of their meagre means of sustenance. What these men did was brave don’t you think?

  6. Trusting God is so key to preventing suicide. My Jesus offers peace and rest to those that follow Him. My Scripture says: ” And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” I will pray for India that the suicide rates will come down. My thoughts and prayers are with you to Vasantha. I am glad you co-hosted with us today. This post is so important and you give such good advice.

  7. The figures are really annoying. I understand that people go through a lot as we’re fast approaching to a world where we don’t have enough time for ourselves but it doesn’t mean that giving up your life is the last option.Suicide is not a solution to anything. Everyone must understand that there is more to life and as you mentioned in the post that there are various ways thru which we can delve into something more productive. It’s really eye-opener post, Vasantha. Thanks for writing it.
