My Support for Saving India’s Lifeline – #RallyForRivers #MyFriendAlexa

We are lacking rain and farmers are dying due to drought. Many rivers beds have turned into playgrounds. It’s really heart breaking and painful. This was making me to loss sleep everyday.

And I want to personally support “Saving India’s Lifeline – #RallyForRivers” campaign by Sadhguru and ISHA Foundation.

Our Rivers Are Dying

India’s rivers are undergoing a drastic change. Due to the pressures of population and development, our perennial rivers are becoming seasonal. Many of the smaller rivers have already vanished. Flood as well as drought are becoming increasingly frequent as rivers turn unruly during the monsoon, and vanish once the rainy season is over.

How This Affects Us

  • Estimates say 65% of our water needs are met by rivers.
  • 2 out of 3 major Indian cities already deal with daily water shortage. Many urban residents pay ten times the normal amount for a can of water.
  • We consume water not just to drink or for domestic purposes. 80% of water is used to grow our food. Each person’s average water requirement is 1.1 million liters a year.
  • Flood, drought and rivers turning seasonal are increasingly leading to crop failure across the country.
  • Climate change is expected to cause worse floods and droughts within the next 25-50 years. During the monsoon, rivers will flood. The rest of the year, drought will follow. These trends are already beginning.

Saving India’s Lifeline – #RallyForRivers

” This is not a protest. This is not an agitation. This is a campaign to raise awareness that our rivers are depleting. Everyone who consumes water must Rally For Rivers.”

  – Sadhguru

#RallyForRivers Logo

Rally for Rivers is a nationwide awareness campaign to revive our rivers. Conceived by Sadhguru, the campaign has been taken up by every section of society across the nation. But this campaign can be a success only if youth lead from the front. Rally for Rivers and Kokuyo Camlin have joined hands to encourage schoolchildren to participate in this campaign, and help spread awareness about reviving our rivers.

  1. Well written. We too, in the Western and the Eastern Cape of South Africa are experiencing dreadful drought. And you’re so right. When the rain does come it can so easily turn into floods, especially in the areas near river banks. Anniversaries to Celebrate

  2. I had no idea about this campaign Vivi, this is so noble coming from a state which shares large territory of our sacred rivers like Ganges & Yamuna I can feel for the cause. I am with you in this crusade please guide me how can I be of any help.

Good luck. I love the poster made by our young artist & you look beautiful as always.

  3. I really admire you for being the compassionate person you are. I think we all should have one cause that we support & spare time for. That’s what makes us more human, doesn’t it?

For me the cause that I want to work for & contribute to is working for education & special needs kids.

  4. Such a noble cause. Vasantha my best wishes to every volunteer associated with RallyforRivers . Few schools in Mumbai were also part of the campaign as you mentioned. I read that children wore blue to schools today.

  5. Its a great initiative and good to see you supporting them this way. You look great with that poster in hand. We should all contribute to the campaigns that are good for mother nature.

  6. A very rampant problem that needs attention and solution by authorities.
You have explained it in an apt manner with great research and facts. Hope you succeed in your efforts to get dried rivers & dying farmers justice.
    Good luck!

  7. I did not know about this campaign before. Thanks Vasantha. There is just nature’s way, as a city like Mumbai has so much rains not needed and in Chennai its scarcity of water. You are doing a great job by spreading the awareness.

  8. That’s a very noble activity to engage in. Indeed, the water beds are drastically decreasing and we humans are knowingly causing the damage to our mother earth. I have seen in one of the reply how you are supporting this good cause. Kudos to you for this effort you are putting in 🙂

  9. Hi Vasantha. My gratitude to you for your sincerity and dedication. I feel if this campaign didn’t have a commercial corporate tie up, had done some on ground work and used the foundation clout with Govt , it would have my support too but merely talking about a known cause of social media does not yield any results. In the cacophony of spoken words, the nation needs hands that contribute, the minds who plan to conserve environment and hearts who think beyond their own power rise.

  10. Yeah. Lots of drought, and damages due to that. Sad to see. This rally for awareness is indeed very essential. 🙂 I didn’t read of this before 1st, else would have worn blue yesterday too.

  11. Great cause to support. Rivers are important for our future. I also hate when I see water is being wasted but politicians only care for money and they don’t care about the disturbance their deeds are creating in nature. Kudos!

  12. Firstly, applause for spreading awareness rally for rivers through your blog.
Secondly, I’m gonna give a missed call and share your noble cause to save our mother rivers.
Finally, you look stunning in Blue.
    My wishes to you.

  13. While I’m in for saving our rivers, I’m not sure how authentic are efforts of such organisations. Many times these are pure gimmicks to gain prominence. I’m sure if each of us can make amends, we all can collectively save our rivers!

  14. I had no idea about this campaign dear. Thanks for writing about it 🙂 .. I wish you all the very best and support you and the campaign whole heartedly

    Regards

  15. India has essentially grown along the banks of major rivers. Our ancient civilizations were born along the waters, and they perished when the rivers shifted course. For many millennia, we maintained the sanctity of this relationship. But in the last few decades, due to the pressures of population and development, our perennial rivers are becoming seasonal. This solution ensures that rivers are restored while also enhancing farmers’ livelihood by more than doubling their income in five years. The availability of fruit also improves nutritional intake among people. Trees help keep rivers perennial, mitigate floods and drought, increase precipitation, mitigate climate change and prevent soil erosion.

  16. Such kind of campaigns always makes me question society. How can citizens be so unaware, and disrespect our natural resources, so much so that we have to come up with such campaigns to wake people up to the situation! All natural resources MUST be valued and not be taken for granted by every person on this planet.

It’s really nice to see that there are many like you Vasantha, who are doing their bit to save our planet. Keep it up, and spread the word!

  17. When I read about #RallyforRivers yesterday in the newspaper I realised that they are not going to come anywhere near my town. I was really disheartened. But now I am glad that someone from my community so passionately participated for this cause. Kudos to you!

  18. Yes, I was aware of this before and I must say that it is a great initiative. We take the resources we have for granted and not realize the importance. Kudos to you!

  19. This is a really good initiative. But one thing I cannot digest is that we really have to take a pledge or an initiative to save our rivers, which is kind of our birthright. The way, things are going is horrible at times.

  20. I admire your support for India’s rivers. We can no longer wait for someone else to do something about preserving Earth’s resources. The government can not help (especially here in the U.S., where we face similar problems. The President -not mine-has slashed several federal funding programs that would maintain or improve federal parks). I am seeing more and more it up to every day citizens to take the lead and help our planet. Good luck to you and others who support these initiatives.

  21. Dying rivers is only taking us to the extinction. Rivers are must for maintaining ecological balance. I gave a missed call too. Thanks for sharing this Vasantha. #MyFriendAlexa #BioscopeReads

  22. Diya@februaryreve

    Hey!
It’s a great cause. I saw some celebs urging people to join the campaign but, nobody explained it. I am glad I stumbled upon this post because now I can make an informed decision. Thanks! 🙂

  23. Family on the wheels

This type of campaign are the need of hour . rather than just making promises these campaign surely look like to make ground changes ..All the best

  24. This is surely a really great cause as I have always believed that while its easy to say that what can one person do, I think of it in the opposite manner that each of us can play a small yet significant role in being the change we want to see.
